I've Been A Storyteller All My Life

I was already a writer when the IBM Personal Computer, the Internet, and the World Wide Web arrived and turned business-as-usual all topsy-turvy.

During the late 1970's and 1980's I was a computer consultant, programmer, and tech writer - both self-employed and with various computer software companies. I always seemed to be the go-to guy for writing documentation, user manuals and advertising.

In the 1990s, I worked for Control Data supporting the U.S. Air Force. I relocated to the Washington, D.C. area (still with Control Data) doing business development and providing sales support for their federal sales force.

I also worked with their communications division, developing sales and marketing materials for multiple product lines and service offerings. And, I represented the company in international working groups and at conferences and trade shows.

While developing marketing materials, we stumbled over the concept of white papers. Originally, these were technical position papers that we presented at standards bodies and trade shows.

When prospective customers began to call out of the blue referencing our white papers, we realized we had discovered a marketing gold mine!

The second serendipity came when we needed to explain the features and benefits of a new, revolutionary product line. Unfortunately it was unknown, complicated, and very expensive.

But, a major government agency and a Fortune 500 company (early adopters) agreed to let us showcase them as success stories.

The customer response was so powerful that full-color multi-page success stories (case studies) became a core component of our company marketing strategy.

In the late 1990s, I joined a small British company, NEXOR, as North American Business Development Manager. I was responsible for business-to-business marketing and relationships in the U.S. and Canada.

I was also in charge of developing sales and marketing materials to support our North American sales force. And, I continued working with international standards groups and speaking at trade shows.

In 2000 I joined the international consulting firm of Booz Allen Hamilton. During my years there, I did significant research and writing for various government agencies and inter-agency working groups.

During my years with Control Data, Nexor, and Booz Allen, I participated in many state and federal proposals as one of the content writers and editors. I've been the "book boss" (volume manager) for technical and business volumes.

And, I've served as the capture manager for a few proposal efforts.

I have developed and taught a wide range of training materials, from technical classes at international trade shows, to classroom and home-study courses on real estate investing.

I have significant experience with public speaking, presentations, speeches, talking point papers, press releases, and backgrounders.

I've also been a magazine columnist, published author, screenwriter, and contributor to international technical standards.

My "secret superpower" is the ability to communicate complex technologies and processes in simple, understandable terms. I can explain college-level concepts at a grade-school reading level.

I'd love to help with your next project. Let's talk.
